Be a Gulf Saver!

As you all probably know (and if you don't you have been living under a rock for the past 3 months), the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has become the largest accidental release of oil into water in history according to recent figures by the U.S. government.

It has been estimated that about 205.8 million gallons of oil have been spewed into the waters, destroying marine life and their habitat. Only about 3.3 million gallons have been collected by BP ships that were hired to clean up the mess. The Gulf of Mexico needs a lot of help, and there is so much that you can do to help clean up this catastrophic mess!

DONATE DONATE DONATE!...and I don't just mean money.

Time- One of the best ways you can donate to the relief efforts is to volunteer your time! There are a lot of organizations that have set up volunteer teams that help to clean up the waters. Gather up a few friends and finish off your summer with a road trip down to the Gulf to lend a hand!
    • The National Wildlife Foundation needs volunteers to join their Surveillance Teams, which help to monitor more than 10,000 miles of the coast.
    • Register to volunteer in Louisiana, for the coordinated Louisiana Gulf Response relief effort.
    • The Sierra Club as well as hundreds of other established organizations have set up Gulf response teams, and really need your help. There are so many volunteer opportunities in multiple states, check out a few and give them the help they need.

Money- A small donation can go along way. Click on the picture below to make a donation to the National Wildlife Foundations Gulf Relief Fund, or find a local organization of your choice that is taking donations for the Gulf, but just make sure the money is getting to the right place!
You can also text 'WILDLIFE' to 20222 to donate $10 dollars right from your cell phone. The money goes directly to NWF. For more information check out their website.

Supplies- Many of the relief efforts are without adequate supplies that could make their jobs a whole lot easier. There is a whole list  from expensive items like digital cameras, all the way to smaller items such as pens. Check out the whole list, and send your donates to:

    National Wildlife Federation
    Attn: Oil Spill Volunteer Network
    11100 Wildlife Center Drive
    Reston, VA 20190

Social Media- Spreading the word is half the battle, the more people know, the more they will be motivated to help out. So help raise awareness and donate your social media site to help out the effort.

    • Join the NWF Fanpage on Facebook, and help share their posts with your friends and family.
Action- One of the best ways to help, is to take action. Contact your local politicians and voice your opinion on the important of supporting clean energy legislation, or demand that oil companies should be forced to clean up oil spills. Don't feel intimidated, remember it just takes one voice to make a lifetime of differences!
