There is a lot of talk going around about hipsters these days...and I finally asked myself...what exactly is a hipster? I can point them out. I serve them PBRs at the bar. But why exactly are they so hip!? (Wait, am I a hipster?---I mean...they DO always have really cool clothes on!)
Urban dictionary says, "Hipsters are a subculture of men and women typically in their 20's and 30's that value independent thinking, counter-culture, progressive politics, an appreciation of art and indie-rock, creativity, intelligence, and witty banter. The greatest concentrations of hipsters can be found living in the Williamsburg, Wicker Park, and Mission District neighborhoods of major cosmopolitan centers such as New York, Chicago, and San Francisco respectively. Although "hipsterism" is really a state of mind, it is also often intertwined with distinct fashion sensibilities."Are hipsters the modern day beatnik? Or the modern interpretation of the hippie?
Hipster guys are usually hottie cool guys at the bar, the ones that look like rock stars! You know, the ones in the skinny jeans with shaggy hair...a pair of Ray Bans even, and a pack of Camels...with a scruffy beard of course! HEY! don't hate! Some of them may look like bums...or "gay" as some guys like to say (obvi judging them because they have style) BUT...hipsters are actually very educated, liberal, open minded, and creative!

I am sure this blog will generate a lot of buzz as people love to hate on hipsters. But bottom line, the effortlessly cool boho vibe of these people is so interesting! I mean they created their own culture and have their own neighborhoods...AND they have the world talking about them!! Google hipster...there are a million places to read about them!
Hipster style has even gone mainstream...I dress like a hipster...South Moon Under buys hipster style clothing...that's the ironic thing... Its become so cool..its gone mainstream...and that's NOT what a being a hipster is all about!...
A city is the perfect place for hipster dwelling! Art, culture, music, diversity, fashion, vintage, coffee shops...a city is perfect for this type of person. I LOVE IT!

Last time South Moon Under was in NYC for a photo shoot we managed to find time to go to the official Hipsterville itself...Williamsburg, Brooklyn! WillyB is home to one of the largest cultures of Hipsters. If for nothing else we HAD to check out what they were wearing...(I mean they are a total fashion trend).
As soon as I got of the subway...I knew, without a doubt I was in the right place...and I was happy! (or maybe i should have been sad...or pissed at the world..or...ok I'll stop judging!)
